Hill Station Escapes

Hot and bothered? Well, don’t be. The scorching 45-degree Delhi heat is a great excuse to explore the hills and mountains of northern India. Here are some gems from my travels that I highly recommend everyone checks out.

Mussoorie

Did I just hear you guffaw at this suggestion? Why on earth would anyone want to head to a tourist infested destination like Mussoorie, right? Well, because Mussoorie is much more than that! Look beyond your typical jaunts like the Mall Road and Kempty Falls and you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Skip the usual stuff and head out to Landour. Home to the likes of author Ruskin Bond and actor Victor Banerjee, Landour is a cantonment area some 20 kilometers from the main part of town. The fact that it’s far removed from the hustle and bustle of Mussoorie, the serene environs with pathways encircling the hillside make it a haven of respite.

Dharamshala

Probably not as convenient to get to as your run of the mill Shimlas and Nainitals, Dharamshala is testimony to ‘good things come to those who wait’…or at least those who undertake a long journey! The best way to get to Dharamshala is to take the train to Pathankot and then hit the road, about a 2 hour run. Home to the Dalai Lama expectedly offers peace and quiet along with spectacular views of snowy peaks in the distance. Divided in to Lower and Upper McLeodganj, I recommend heading to the latter and continue to Bhagsu Falls behind the Bhagsunag Falls to see the valley in bloom.

Ooty

As far as hill stations go, Ooty ranks as one of my top favorites. If you skip the typical tourist trail and head further in to the Nilgiris, the drive will familiarize you with every shade of green in the book! Dense forests, rolling hills and glossy lakes, the landscape is stunning in many ways. I would recommend opting to stay at one of the many homestays available in and around Ooty. However, if you are travelling with small kids or older parents, opt for a hotel as you may find the services and facilities more comfortable.

Where are you planning to beat the heat? Do share.

Hill stations are always the best place to visit when you are sizzling under scorching heat. All the happiness will come back once you put your feet in these places. Summer days also give us the opportunity to enjoy with all of our family members due to summer holidays. However, booking a comfortable hotel or resort room is highly important in order to make the most of the days and making the journey a memorable one. This summer we are going to Ooty and hoping for the best relishing moments there.
